Nature Adventure Trip to GEV

Nature Adventure Trip to Govardhan Eco village near Wada.

Bhaktivedanta Hospital Youth Foundation organized a Nature Adventure trip to Govardhan Ecovillage near Wada on 21st April 2012 taking a group of 20 college kids from various colleges all over Mumbai such as Thakur College, SN college, Patuck Gala college, Royal College and others. The aim of this trip was to give the students a wonderful experience working in nature and learning about various eco friendly projects that have been undertaken successively at the Farm to conserve nature and find alternative means of energy such as Soil Biotechnology(SBT) which is a unique way of recycling the human waste and sewage using natural flora and fauna to purify the contaminated water to be fit enough to be reused for other purposes such as irrigation without the uses of chemicals thus helping to conserve water. Bio gas plant which is a unique way of producing energy using cowdung and banana leaves which is then used to provide electricity. The students especially learnt about the benefits of Mother cow not only just for giving milk and other milk products but also how effectively the cow urine and cow dung can be used to produce various medicines and cosmetics. They also saw Vermicomposting and organic farming techniques which was an eye opener for the city born and bred youth.

The day began early when we picked up the enthusiastic participants from Mira Road Station, and sharp at 7.20 am the bus left for Wada which was about one and half hours drive. We reached at about 9 am and immediately were served a sumptuous breakfast of upma and dosas with chutney. The teams were made and were taken for a tour of the Farm and its various projects as mentioned above. The teams were then given various tasks such as planting trees, harvesting vegetables, brushing of the cows and making of cow products and lastly organic farming. After about one hour of hard labour working in the fields the teams then set out finding the clues for the treasure hunt which was specially designed to take them all around the Govardhan Ecovillage and its landmark.

They returned exhausted panting and out of breath and were welcomed by a delicious lunch. The afternoon session commenced with a very informative workshop on Warli painting. Though tired a few of them actively participated and made warli artwork. They also collected a lot of objects from nature and worked in a team to create some ecofriendly concept. This was followed by a very instructive seminar on “Hazards of Modern Day Lifestyle”. The eventful day ended with a energizing kokum sherbet and a small gift to each participant of a fragrant Dhoop sticks made out of cow products. Everyone boarded the bus with a heavy heart and a desire to come back for sure in winter!!

New Teen Trends- Volunteering

Gen Y, or Millenials (as they are called) are a feisty lot. Many of them may seem whacky to the more conservative Gen X. That’s generation gap in its truest form. In the 1970s there was a famous saying “do not trust anyone over 30”. Same thing holds true even today. The present Gen Y crowd are quite a misunderstood lot. In fact it is difficult to understand them. The older generation wonders why they spend hours tapping on their cell phones when they can just pick up the phone and call their friends and talk for hours. Or for that matter go for a nice walk with them. They cannot for the world understand why this generation always walks around with ear phones either of their cell phones or their iPods. No doubt they are a wired generation( literally wires coming out of their ears!!)
But fear not friends, we at Uth spirit understand you, and understand your spirit which drives you. And we are here to channelize this youth spirit in ways which will not only uplift you but also make you life more interesting. Gone are the days when youth had no say in anything be it politics or social issues. Today Youth has the power; they have a VOICE and an indomitable Spirit to achieve success far beyond imagination. We want you millennials to understand your true potential, which is not just dancing on the latest bollywood numbers in discos and pubs, or puffing away at hookah parlors or whiling your time away lost in a virtual world, but to use your god given talents to good use.
Set new teen trend by volunteering in various social causes. Take up a cause and work for it. Help NGO’s working for the betterment of society. Use your time to make a difference. Work to give the underprivileged a better life. We at Uthspirit want to make you aware that there is so much that you can give to the society, rather than just taking from it. It’s high time that we give back what we have received. “In giving we receive” is a statement from the bible. As Radhanath swami says in his book “The Journey Home” If you don’t have a cause worthy enough to die for then there is nothing worthy in this life to live for or something like that. Very inspiring words for the youth indeed. Thank you.
So gear up and buck up for some solid work. I know you have the potential and I know you all can DO IT!! Make this a fashion, a new trend of reaching out to the poor or doing something to create awareness for a social cause or do something for the environment, plant more trees or help NGO’s working in that field. Now the sky is the limit.

Roll up your sleeves and let us get the ball rolling!!
